Welcome to Cambridge Iyengar Yoga
What is Iyengar Yoga?Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar (1918-2014) developed this highly sophisticated systematic approach to teaching the art and science of Yoga over more than 75 years of study. Through dedication to practice using his own body as a vehicle for experimentation and enquiry a clear system emerged which has now come to be known as "Iyengar Yoga".
Iyengar Yoga is deeply rooted in the ancient Indian tradition and philosophy of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. Patanjali outlines 8 components to a complete yoga practice, the 3rd of which is asana (physical posture). BKS Iyengars teaching starts here so the beginner may gain strength, flexibility and an understanding of their body first. As they progress in their practice, the students interest may be sparked to learn more, from the breath (pranayama), the sutras and beyond sowing the seeds to explore this ancient system. Yoga is a discipline that can provide a complete approach to life offering practical tools to create and maintain bodily health and vitality, mental clarity, emotional serenity, and spiritual well-being. |
